Colin Kaepernick, a football quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, refuses to stand for the American National Anthem.  He feels that black people are being OPPRESSED!

Is racism still a problem today?

Is this quarterback right or wrong for not standing during the anthem?

Explain.

  1. Yes sadly racism is still a big problem in today's society. I think that no one should be left out or not respected because of their skin color or religion. I find it rude when someone doesn't respect the other person because their not the same skin colour or same religion as you. Sadly racism is still an issue today. I think that the quarterback isn't doing the right thing because even if it's not your anthem you're not showing respect towards the other player.

  2. I would say that racism is still an issue in our society. I don’t think people should be judged or disrespected just because of their skin color and it’s disappointing knowing that there are still people out there who think like that. I wouldn’t necessarily say that the quarter back did the wrong thing or the right thing because, he was trying to prove a point but at the same time I could see how it was a bit disrespectful towards the team by not showing his respect towards an old tradition.

  3. Sadly racism is a problem still in our day and age and it sucks. Many of my relatives a racial minorities and from the stories I've heard that they can get treated pretty badly and its a difficult life to be judged and mistreated. I think that the football player should stand and fight for what he believes in and no one should tell him that he should stand if he doesn't want to and after all America was the country that mistreated his people for a very long time.

  4. I do find that racism is still a problem today. Talking about the QB not standing for the anthem, I would say he did the right thing. Why do we stand for the anthem? Because we are proud of our country and for what are county has done for us. America hasn't done anything for the black people. Even though Barack Obama is still in power nothing has changed. Recently, an unarmed black man was shot for no reason and no American politician bothered talking about the incident. I don't find that the QB had any reason to be so proud of being an American! Yes, it is true that you should respect other countries but if you want respect you give respect. This QB was the first to stand for black lives so I don't think he did anything wrong. Although this doesn't mean only #blacklivesmatter! All lives matter. The fact that black people take offence when you say all lives matter is kind of bad thou.

  5. I personally think that the racism problem in America is being approached in the wrong way. Sure it's nice of Colin to point out that we have a problem but we already new about the problem. We have known about it for a long time now it's why we have ethics class. We also know that for some reason the raicism my problem is bigger in the us then it is here so the question is what did we do Right?

Personally I think that the cost difference in higher level education is something to look at specifically university. If you look at the price range between Canadian university's and American we see this 5000 dollars to 7000 for Canadian and 40000 to 50000 for American that's per year how much the university's take and were also not including the fact that the American dollar is worth more than ours. You may be asking yourself why does this matter at all. Simple better education equals better job and better job means more money , more money means more power and more power means more everything.

Let's pretend that life is a game of monopoly putting property as jobs. The problem is to by any good property you need 2000 dollars just so you can think about buying any. Just happens so that the black family started off with 200 while
the white with 5000. Guess who wins the game and now you have unequal power which goes against democratie.

If the tool to build the American Dream is education and you don't have it then you don't have a dream that is in the realm of possibilities. The problem of unequal power has been a problem since the dawn of mankind. You have a rock somebody else doesn't you threaten that persone with the Rock and now you have control over that persone. We need to split that rock in half.

What do you guys think needs to be done in order to help fix their problem?

  6. Racism is defiantly still a huge part of society. Wether we like it or not. It will never really end because everyone see's things differently and because of that a lot of people will forever be discriminated because of there color of skin . Honestly i don't totally disagree with the quarterback. He's probably been through more then many people can imagine. He's trying to show the world that racism is still part of society and it shouldn't be and people who disrespect him don't deserve his respect . The only thing that i would disagree with is that it does direspect the people who actually did their job in protecting everybody as much as they could.

  7. Yes, racism is still a very big problem today, people in our world are cruel and thats something that can't really be changed, we can avoid it but not end it. I don't really disagree with the quarterback of the 49ers not standing for the anthem, if he believes what he is doing is right thats fine with me as long as this cause is a good one and his cause is.

    1. I completely agree, except for the avoiding part. We shouldn't avoid it, we should stop it right away no more avoiding!

  8. Although racism has come a long way from a few years ago, it's still a big problem in our society today. It's truly sad that anyone would discriminate another person because of their skin tone. But there isn't only racism, there's many people that are sexist too, there's also police brutality, discrimination of religion, etc. Police today claim they protect us and serve us justice, but are they really serving justice by covering up the countless murders and assaults they have done, all driven by racism. Murdering and assaulting people for no reason is NOT okay, but since the police all seem to be united they "cover up" their mistakes. But you can't hide facts, not when the whole world has access to the facts on tape. I'm not saying that all police are racist but the ones that are need to be stopped.

I don't think this quarterback deserves all the hate he's getting. He has a good point for not wanting to stand for their national anthem, especially when their own presidential candidate, Donald trump is a walking joke. Not only is their president extremely racist and dangerous but the police are too. I don't think what he did was wrong, if it's coming to a point where the citizens aren't respecting their own country maybe there needs to be more questions being asked.

    1. I agree with you that the police do claim that they serve and protect us. Also as you said the quarterback does have a good point for not wanting to stand up.

  9. Okay, yes racism is still a thing. It will always still be a thing, people like blaming others for they're problems. And its always good to have a celebrity support these movements and all..
Besides i think the concept of anthems is just silly. Oh oh! and I think its in his right to not stand up, even though i doubt he has to ever actually experience racism himself though.

  10. I think there is racism today, not just towards blacks but towards everyone really. I believe that the qb isn't right for not standing up because sports have nothing to do with politics. I'm also pretty sure that he isn't doing this just for blacks but also to gain popularity and for everyone to talk about him.

  11. Of course racism is still going on today and it always will. if he feels he is being oppressed then he has the right to sit down and express his feelings. Honestly i think it is unnecessary to even have these anthems. although i doubt he even deals with racism, he still has his rights. i hope we put an end to all this!

  12. Racism presently more concealed in our society than in the past, therefore making it seem like it occurs less but in reality it just as common as it was a few years back. i think the train of thought of many people still remains racist but now its politically incorrect to revel those thoghts. that is why police do not emit that their racist and in the heat of the moment that act that way.

  13. To this day racism is still a problem. I don’t think that people should be judged because the colour of their skin because it is not a choice that you can make and no matter what skin colour you have you should not be treated differently. This quarterback isn’t wrong but isn’t right at the same time. He wasn’t right because it’s a tradition to stand up during the anthem but he also wasn’t wrong because he wanted to show that his country isn’t doing the right thing by killing innocent black people.

  14. Yes I still believe that racism is going on today because eveytime there is somebody who dies it is always a black man and never a white man. I believe the main reason that it is them because the police do it a lot so other people think its right to also do it. I think that the quarter back has the right to do what he did because a lot of black people are getting killed by the cops in America. I would do the same.

  15. Yes of course racism is still a problem today and in my opinion and it will forever be a problem in this world. The stereotypes given to not just to black people, but to everyone it's so terrible. I think the QB is wrong for not standing up for the national anthem. Sports is suppose to be fun and non-political and he just started a bunch of politics in sports

  16. Yes, racism is a major problem that's going around even today. Terrible stuff happen or no reason. Let's say a police officer stops a black man for speeding, if the guy goes to put his hands up the police officer will think he has a gun and shoot him. It still happens today. From all this the qb was right to not stand up for the national anthem because from these"accidents", clearly segregation still lives and it is a problem to everybody.

  17. I feel like Colin kaepernick and reed are allowed to there own disision to stand up or not. There is still racism in this world but it went from not much racism to alot of racism I understand there will always be a lot of racism that we can't do anything about we don't even know what racism is because let's say a white cop kills a black guy everybody will say it's racism

  19. Yes sadly racism is still a major problem today especially towards Syrians and other minorities. I think the football player is neither right nor wrong it is right because during that time two black males were murdered by police officer even though they were unarmed. But it is wrong because he wasn't appreciating the people who sacrificed their lives so they could have freedom and he wasn't showing respect for the soldiers who are fighting for our freedom.

  22. Yes sadly racism is still a problem in our society which is not right.People today our still getting treated differently because of there race or there religion which is unacceptable.I believe that this quarterback is not doing the right thing, because even though racism is a big problem, you should always stand for the national anthem because its just respect for the people who have died for us and to bring us where we are today.

  23. Unfortunately, racism is still present in our society. People are still being mistreated and disrespected because of their race. I fully believe in standing up and speaking up for what you believe in, however I do think it's a little rude not to stand for your country's national anthem, not to stand for all the soldiers who fought for freedom. So, I don't think that the quarter back is necessarily in the wrong but I don't necessarily think he's in the right either, I mean there are other ways to get your message across that don't disrespect all the soldiers who fought for freedom.
