In the short story "Harrison Bergeron," Harrison breaks the rules of society.

Are rules created to be broken?

Have you ever broken the rules?

Did you get in trouble for that?

Explain.

  1. These blogs keep on making me wanna start a rant.
So... rules are not made to be broken, people just break 'em cuz when you tell someone to not do something, they just want to do it even more. Rules were created to keep people "safe", but people can handle themselves. When instinct takes over, you don't need rules(keep ur judgements to yourself). I've broken so many rules in my life. It's fun. Yes and no ive gotten in trouble for breaking rules, But it's worth it, cuz whenever you intentionally break a rule, you do it for a reason. Am I right or am I right? I'm left. So yeah...

  2. Rules are made for safety. In our childhood that's how rules were taught to us. But when we grow up we feel like trying different stuff and most of the time we break the rules sometimes without noticing or because we just feel like it. All of us broke rules before. When i was younger i broke my house rules a lot because my brothers blamed it on me. I did get in trouble for that but now that we're teenagers they still blame it on me. So i'm use to it but i don't get in trouble because my parents know that it's my brothers fault.

  3. Rules are not meant to be broken. For most of the time rules are created to help and guide others for the better, not for the worse. I have broken a couple rules, especially last year in high school. It wasn’t as bad as you think. I did get into trouble for doing what I did and the consequences were bad. I had to serve 5 detentions and an in school suspension for 1 day.

  4. rules are meant to be broken if you dont break the rules where is the fun in life where is the action. there is a rule that kids should get a certain amount of homework every night the teachers dont care kids have to go to school why, we could make our own decision. we break a rule suck it up do the consequence then go live life how you want to live it dont let any rules get in your way. ive broken so many rules in my life ive otten caught i suferd the consequence and went back living life i my way no one tells me what i cant do i just do it if i want to. did any one tell you live life to the furthess the rules are stopping you lay back a bit.

  5. Rules are meant to be broken. When the school tells you that you can't wear ripped jeans its not like wearing normal jeans is going to protect you in any way. The only rules that should be listened to are for actual safety. Everything else is not important. I have done things against the rules like sneaking out, lying and etc. But I think that as long as i am not hurting anyone everything is fine. I have been punished and i will say that they are not fun punishments but what is life without having stories to tell your friends and family about the cool things you weren't allowed to do.

  6. in my opinion I think rules where made to be broken because we were taught all these things and how to grow up probably that everybody wants to try new things , nobody wants to be similar to others cuz if we were all the same life would most likely be boring . obviously I've broken rules before and yes I have got caught but I think by doing that it just helps you grow up and realize what's right and what's wrong

  7. According to me definitely rules meant to be broken if old rules will be broken then only we can have the pleasure to enjoy new rules and have the pleasure to break them. But not each and every rule is meant to be broken for selfish reasons only those which can cause positive effects on the society. It is about having an adventure, and sometimes we just gotta do it, for the best..

  8. Rules are supposed to make you do what your supposed to do, but whats the fun in that? Rules weren't originally meant to be broken, but lets be honest, they are. I've broken soo many rules its not even funny, and I have gotten caught a couple times. It's all about learning what are the right and what are the wrong decisions, but why not have a little fun while you learn?

  9. I do like to believe that some rules ARE meant to be broken. I've broken tons of rules in the past, and sure, I get in trouble for it all the time by my parents, the principle, etc. For example, one day I came into school with ripped jeans on and the principal got really mad and yelled at me to go change. I disagree with that rule and I'm pretty sure everyone else does too, that's why I think that that rule was meant to be broken. I just think that it's all about learning through experience, what rules are meant to be broken and which rules aren't.

  10. Rules were created to help people. Guide them. Clearly, that's not the case here because nobody respects them but actually revolt against them. When I was small, I did get in trouble but for no reason. We used to play and have snow ball and fort fights but for some weird reason, when I'd be the one to attack, people would take me the wrong way and get me in trouble for like punching which I didn't do.

  11. I think rules were created to help people and keep them safe. I don't think rules are meant to be broken because they are a huge part of what keeps us United as people. I say this because if there were no rules our society would fall into anarchy. Yes I have broken rules before, but if brake a rule no one would find out. What can I say,I'm pretty scetchy.

  12. Well obviously not. If rules were made to be broken then why would you create them in the first place. They are made for your safety and security. People break them because well depends on the situation someone might murder someone. They did so because they are either crazy or have something against said person. Or maybe someone robbed a store because they are high, drunk, crazy or need money. All depends on the situation. Yes, i have broken a rules. Seriously who hasn't. If it isn't a rule by the government that someone has broken they they've probably broken their parents rules. But everyone has definitely broken a rule before. And yes i have been caught. I always get caught. I'm not a very sneaky person.

  13. Rules weren't meant to be broken but once in a while it's fun to break rules as a kid. Rules were made to keep everyone in order and I guess keep us safe because if we didn't have rules people would be able to do anything they want and that would be like the movie Purge where people could hurt or kill anyone they want. That wouldn't be a fun world. To be honest I have broken many rules but I think everyone has at least broken one rule in their life.

  14. I Think rules where made to be broken, if they where not then what would be the fun in that. I have broken many rules in my life time. Some of the times when I broke the rules I was caught but not often, I think rules where put there to scare people and to try to make people do bad things less.

  15. Rules are there for our safety and the safety of others. It also total chaos. For example, trafic rules prevent accidents. Of course I have broken many rules but if I didn't I would be perfect. When I have been caught I was in trouble for it.

  16. Rules are for normally to respect other or for safety, I don't think that rules are meant to e broke, they are made for other people to be respected. I have obviously broke many rules in my life. Everyone has.Today I broke a stupid rule (in my opinion), I wore ripped jean in school. It is not a huge rule, so I didn't get any consequence, since I didn't pass next M. Ali.

  17. I don't think rules were meant to be broken, they're meant for the safety of others and for respecting our environment. Yes of course I have broken rules before, everyone has. Yes I have gotten in trouble for it and sometimes I haven't. When I do get in trouble it's usually a consequence like getting grounded for a week or something.

  18. Rules were not meant to be broken, but every once in a while its tempting to break a few rules.Rules were meant to keep people safer. I have broken many rules in my life and once in a blue moon I get caught but that is what usually teaches me, that sometimes theirs a big punishment for doing something not so big.

  19. Rules are not meant to be broken, it's why there are rules. To prevent you from doing something and have I ever broken them? of course, we all do every once and awhile. I bet I even break rules unintentionally. I try not to break rules and when I do it's never has ill intention. And have I gotten in trouble? well sure, for example when i was in 3ird grade me and my friends were having a snowball fight. We weren't allowed but since we thought it was a dumb rule me and my friends broke it. We got a yellow card because that's what my school did for punishment where we'd have to have our parents sign it.

    1. I disagree, I think its a very controversial issue, Although personally I think they should sometimes be broken.

  20. I don't think rules are made to be broken. Why? Because the purpose of rules are to make things fair, and if we break them then it would be unfair. Many may argue that rules limits many people from achieving their true potential, but I disagree because you can easily achieve success within the rules. Rules are their to set boundaries so that people who have negative willingness don't hurt the one who don't. The bottom line is, without rules our world would be chaotic.

  21. I think that rules are made for a reason, sometimes for the good and others for the bad. Take Harrison Bergeron as an example, in this instance it was a good thing that he broke the rules. He showed the world that equally isn't actually happening among them and there will always be a higher power. I think rules are made to be broken because of history. Blacks weren't allowed to vote, neither were women. Was that right no? Throughout history people have been breaking rules and making new ones, if that doesn't tell us that rules are meant to be broken at least sometimes, I don't know what will.

  22. To me personally it depends on the rule. If it is important for example don’t climb into the tiger exhibit at the zoo or don’t swim in a lake with piranhas in it, then you shouldn't break the rules. If it is mildly important then you can bend the rules (but not break them) meaning you take the rule given to you and change it based off a technicality for example, a rule saying don’t run then you just walk really quickly and if someone tells you to stop “running” you just say “ I'm not running I'm just walking really quickly” and you won't get in trouble based off that technicality. Then there are the useless rules, like don't continue reading this great book ‘till next week or don't continue working on your project ‘till monday or something like that, then you can break the rules because they aren’t helpful (but you shouldn't because you can get in trouble). I have broken the rules but very rarely because I usually just bend them to my favour, but yes i have broken the rules and have gotten in trouble for it. Here is a story that I can remember breaking the rules and getting in trouble for it . The reason why I got in trouble was because I was on a field trip to visit a world war two boat the u.s.s massachusetts and one night we had to do a scavenger hunt. So we made up our teams but I had to team up with someone I didn’t like and we started off and i’m starting to warm up to the kid but then the kid started crying and said he wanted to stop, so we left him behind at our sleeping quarter because we knew he'd be safe there but then we got in trouble because the supervisors found him wandering alone and said we ditched him so our group got in trouble for leaving the kid alone by himself, and long story short I and everyone else in our group gave up because the fun was ruined by our mistake of leaving him alone and we lost the game.

  23. Rules are put in place not to be broken of course however, society has to move as slow as it's slowest member which is why new laws get created as more and more people break them. So while it's slightly good that people do break the law in new ways because we can adjust them, those new laws aren't made specifically to be broken. Though it is fun to break the rules and I never get caught.

  24. No, rules are created for a reason which is
to keep people safe. The rules of society are carefully created based on the environment surrounding the population. These rules were not meant to be broken, which is why there are consequences for the people who do break them. Yes, like many people I have broken the rules.
In our society today, there are many rules that should not be in place, and are broken by many people on a day to day basis. I don't normally get in trouble for breaking the rules, since their little rules that aren't observed much.

  25. Some rules are created to be broken. Other rules like murdering someone shouldn’t be broken. The rules that are supposed to be broken the dress code of school it's so stupid we can't wear what we want to school but we wear these clothes everywhere else. I rarely break the rules but when I do I always get caught.

  26. Generally rules are not made to be broken but in today's society a lot of people break the rules. I find that rules are sometimes totally ignored and no one cares. I have broken rules before but I have never been caught. I do however think that I shouldn't make this a habit and continue breaking rules just because I dont get caught.

  27. I personally think that rules are not meant to be broken because rules are just there to protect us. But even tho you are not supposed to break these rules because people now a days tend to feel rebellious. I have broken a couple rules before but it was never a big thing and i've never gotten caught, I think that our world would be a better place if everyone obeyed the rules because the rules are there for a reason.
