Blog 50 - Wednesday, May 3, 2017

Up until July 14, 1976, Canada used the death penalty.  The method they used was HANGING!

Over 1,400 Canadians were executed.

In 1987, a vote to bring back the death penalty was introduced, but the motion was defeated  by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

In order to alleviate the congestion in many prisons (as seen in the movie 13th), should Canada re-instate the death penalty?

Explain.

  2. I find that that Ideia is the dumbest idea I've ever heard sinse Pauline marouais was the preamear of Quebec. No matter how bad people get there should still not have a death penalty because or else your taking someone's life that could just live it in prison it is really un fair for the people that are blamed for murder when they didn't do it. Just like John in green mile he never killed any one of those kids he tried to save them. They should have looked in to his case even more.

  3. I do not think Canada should re-instate the death penalty just for them to free up some room in prisons and to not have congestion. I do not think anyone should ever be sentenced to the death penalty no matter how severe whatever they did is. No one should die for what they've done except maybe be punished. In my opinion I think everyone should live. If they want to decongest prisons then they should either expand or create more for the prisoners.

  4. Death penalty shouldn't be brought back, especially if it's just to free up space like they wanted to do back in the 70's and 80's in the United States. Although the prison population in Canada was only around 41000 in 2012 and Statistics Canada show that the percentage of prisoners is dropping every year. Besides if more space is necessary, why not just expand it and add more cells to a prison if it's really necessary. Besides I think the families of those victims would much rather the criminal spend more time in prison to learn their lesson rather than have that criminal worry about his\her own death moments before.

  5. the death penalty should definitely not be brought back, especially when its a free country. everyone makes mistakes but no matter how severe actions they did, they shouldn't take the prisoner's live away because of a dumb action that they did. They should get a consequence but they shouldn't give their lives because of something that they did and can be fixed with a punishment and not with their lives.

  6. I do believe that Canada should have a death penalty. No matter how bad your crime is you committed it and you took someone else's life or you abuse them for a period of time. Why should they have been abused and hurt and not you. If you commit the crime be prepared to do the time or in this case be prepared for your death. Maybe a public hanging isn't the most efficient way of handling things but a way of ending someone's life with a Nero might be something Canada should look back into. How is it fair that you get and someone's life and be free to continue yours, even if it's in prison. Why do you get to hurt someone because you felt like it and not get the call punishment as you put your victim through.

  7. I think Canada should definitely not bring back the death penalty. I believe in second chances and the death penalty in my opinion is harsh and cruel, it's taking someone's life because of their actions. What if someone ends up being innocent, just like John Coffey in The Green Mile. I just think that this consequence should not be legal, I think we should let people who have done bad things do their time in jail and hopefully learn their lesson and not kill them.

  9. i think there should be a death penalty. I think criminals who did heavy crime like assignation on important people, multiple murders, multiple rapes should get the death penalty. Because i don't think you want a psycho being released from jail to do more crimes. But small crimes like robbery, assault, drugs, harassment, illegal weapon possession and etc.. should just serve time for their crimes.

  10. no, i do not think that the death penalty should be re-instated, it is a very bad Idea, re-instating the death penalty is a bad thing because, its technically murder, and if you do something really really bad, like rape or multiple murders, the death sentence is like being let out of jail, but without getting to continue your life, but by staying in jail, that is more of a punishment.

  12. YES WE SHOULD BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. Actually no I don't think that we should bring it back I just need more views man so I resorted to click bating i'm sorry but now since you have read this far you might as well read on. Anyways I think that our prison/justice system is terrible.Number 1 they sentence people for way to long. Did you know that in Norway the maximum prison sentence that can be given out is 21 years. Oh and by the way noways murder per ca pita is 2.2 out every 100 000. This means that out of every 100 000 inhabitants only 2.2 are murdered every year in comparison to the united states 373 out 100 000. I Must say not bad Norway. Also you should look up Norwegian prison cells they actually look pretty sweet also in minimum security prisons the prisoners have the keys to their cell doors not the guards. So you may be asking your self whats the difference between Norway and the united states. Well you can clearly see that Norway focuses on rehabilitation while the us focuses on punishment. That's not all, now i'm going to talk about Portugal and drugs which you may again be asking your self's how does Portugal involve its self in this, well in 2001 Portugal made new drug laws decriminalizing the use of weed, cocaine and heroine and taking the money that was originally used to punish these people and put it into rehabilitation. They based their actions on research done by Bruce k. Alexander and his studies on cocaine. Anyways i'm not gonna bore you with statistics so to sum it up basically the rats put in rat park a place with a bunch of other rats were they could socialise and more importantly have sex with other rats didn't drink cocaine laced water while the rats who were left alone over dosed and died. His experiments in conclusion showed that addiction isn't
a chemical problem but were instead a problem with the rats having nothing to do so they filled their time and loneliness with drugs. This explains why you grandma doesn't become a morphine junky after her hip operation. Also around the same time that the experiments took place the Vietnam war was ending and if you didn't know there was an alarming 15% of use soldiers addicted to heroine and every body was afraid that a big chunk of the US population we be junky's for the rest of they're lives but instead when they came back 99% just stopped. This goes in line with the studies I was talking about because when you are in a jungle all alone with strangers who you are depending on to keep you alive while their are people and traps trying to kill you, you tend to feel alone. Meanwhile being in society and doing stuff is great and it mostly takes away the need for heroine. Compare our system that we use to deal addicts to Portugal. We lock our addicts up in small cages and limit their social life to a bare minimum meanwhile in Portugal they give their addicts clean equipment to do their drugs so that they don't reuse needles and spread deseases and also help the find jobs to get them back into society. Although Portugal heroine abuse rates are still high they have been dropping drastically since 2001 compare to the US were they are rising. In conclusion I think that the death penalty is bad as it is way to hard of a punishment. If we want to make our society more productive we should focus on rehabilitation instead of punishment thank you

  13. I do not think Canada should re-instate the death penalty, because there is no good that comes out of that. I find that if you committed a crime you should be sent to jail for the time you have to serve depending on you're crime or crimes, and that is you're punishment. I find that the death penalty is not the best idea because people only have one life no matter what and just because they committed a crime or crimes doesn't mean we should end more lifes then are already being ended.

  14. I think they should bring back the death penalty. Because if someone kills someone just because they hate them then that person shouldn't just still live in a prison. They deserve to die. They should only use the death penalty on serious crimes like first degree murders, terrorist acts etc.

  15. No, i don't think death penalty should be re-instated. For one criminals who do crime should do the time wether it's life sentence or not. They should suffer in jail looking at the 3 walls and bars all day. Wondering why they did what they did. If they get executed then they don't have to suffer anything except the fear of dying. Two, some people are innocent yet thrown behind bars and have to suffer the consequences of something they didn't do and if you re-instate death penalty therefor you might be killing the innocent ones the ones who could have been great leaders with great stories but never got the chance to do so because they were executed . Three overall executing someone is like man slaughter. It's sad to have to watch someone die it isn't something anyone should have to do. People die in this world without a choice , so killing someone who doesn't have to die it's just painful to know that such cruelty ever happened in this world.

  16. I don't think that death penalty should be slowed in Canada because, we can't just kill people even if they are criminals. It doesn't make sense that they would risked thousands of people lives just to have more room in a prison. Americans should be more responsible by looking at the amount of prisoners growing each year, they should find a way not only to have more space in a prison also for safety.

  18. There is no way on earth that that law is coming back. This law was terrible back then and still is today. Sure a guy created a crime so he should basically die. What's going on right here is revenge. What I mean by that is let's say somebody kills a friend. Now his friend wants revenge because he killed his friend. It is the same problem because here one guy did something bad which he should have not done, therefore they should kill that guy. Right here when the death penalty was still actif, it made the officers and everybody part of the death penalty technically a criminal. I do not know if you guys do not see my perspective but it just goes to show that people ordering the death penalty just as bad as the criminals. This is why WE should not bring back the death penalty.

  19. I think that they shouldn't re-instate the death penalty because maybe that those people can get better sooner or later. If they don't get better then that is when I believe that it would be right to only put them in the place that they put others in when they didn't deserve it. But if they only did something once and they learn their lessons then that is when they are good to go and they only need to serve time in jail.

  20. I'm against the death penalty because it used to be used to send a message and discourage crime back during Canada's early years however, nowadays, prison life has become almost scarier than death itself even. Not only that but, times have changed. Prison didn't used to be as scary as it is now so the death penalty made sense as a better way to prevent crime.

    ReplyDelete
  21. no they should not. Even if you did something "bad" that deserves that consiquence it's Better to let them suffer in jail then kill them, especially if their guilty and you find out later if you kill them it would me to late. Also in my opinion prison is already scarier than death.

  22. I think it's a bad idea because no one deserves to die like that. And if they are a terrible criminal that should sever in prisons as much as possible. Also they person can change over time with the right mental help with physiologies and doctors. Two wrongs don't make a right.

  23. I don't think we should bring back the death penalty. I think that no matter how bad the crime, no one should ever be sentenced to death. No one deserves to die. Even if that person killed someone else, it doesn't make anything better by killing the person who did it. A life is a life, it's valuable.

  24. I don't believe that death penalty is the answer for anything. Over 90% of criminals, murderers and serial killers have a mental Ilness that they cannot control and that can develop as early as birth. They need help, illnesses like psychosis or schizophrenia can do this to people. You may wonder how I know this well I've lived with people who've had these terrible illnesses and it's so sad how you can see it destroy them. I believe that no one is evil or a bad person we are all put on this planet for a reason. I'm not saying that criminals shouldn't be punished but the death penalty is inhuman and wrong. We are not god we do not get to decide who lives and who dies. People with theses diseases need help and therapy some people can't help what they do either because of voices they may have or urges. The death penalty is wrong and should not be legal ever. Don't forget that they are human and have illnesses and issues that destroy their lives. I agree to punishment but there should be a equal amount of therapy involved and we shouldn't be treating them like their animals.

  25. I don't think they should reinstate the death penalty. One reason it that it wouldn't solve anything. The criminal wouldn't learn there lesson because they are killed and killing the killer won't bring back the person he or she killed. Two: no one deserves to die. It is a human right given at birth to be alive. No matter what a person has done they shouldn't be killed for it they should just be punished for it.

  26. I believe the death penalty shouldn't be reinstated, and here are the reasons why. It's unethical, wrong on so many levels and damn right cruel. Let's say for example someone killed someone, do you think that the right thing to do is to kill them? some might say yes but i disagree only because i find that letting them rot in prison would be a much worse punishment.

  27. I strongly disagree with the death penalty. I think that even if your a really really bad person who deserves to die that you shouldn't. I think that dying would be the easy way out, if you've done something terribly wrong I think you deserve to rot in a prison cell for the rest of your life. I'm really happy that Canada doesn't have this law in place and I hope they don't re-enforce it anytime soon.

  28. I don't think Canada should re-instate the death penalty since everyone deserves to live and I believe in giving people a second chance. I think that it is fair to punish people that have broken the law and done extremely bad things such as murder, but they should also have the chance to try and explain themselves.

  29. Nope. just straight up no. what if the person is not guilty "oh well sorry but we ummm found out that that guy we killed last week wasnt guilty so here is a few hundred dollars and uhhh im sorry i gues". just no why would that have to be brought back its the descisions made that need to change and the way people look at things is all wrong

  30. I think death penalty is necessary. The reason why I think we should have it to inforce the consequences. The idea of dying for punishment will for sure scare people into doing less crimes. Another reason on why it would be good is, more space in prisons and less expenses. Lastly, I know no one will say it but I will, purge is good!
